ARCHOS 504 AND 704
The main recovery error you will get with these units is recovery code 4. With the options no, repair, or format. Format is the most reliable but it does erase all date on the hard drive. Try repair first. If that doesn't work then use format. Either way, if it tells you to connect to pc and install an update file you most likely don't need a new hard drive.
When you connect the Archos unit it to your computer your pc will see the Archos as an external hard drive. The update file they are talking about can be downloaded from the link bellow. Just copy and paste it to the Archos unit that can be seen in My PC.
Once download the file and copy it to the Archos click ok on the Archos itself and it will do the rest.
ARCHOS 605
There are many error codes for the 05 series. 101, 102, 107, 108. Those are the ones I personally seen. The only one that you should worry about is 102. More likely than not it means the hard drive is fried. Especially if you click format and repair and it just resets itself. So lets focus on the other ones. The options for all these error codes are:
NO
REPAIR
FORMAT DISK
Clicking on any of these will lead to:
Connect to pc and install an update file.
Do that at this time but don't touch anything on the unit itself.
Your computer will see the unit as an external hard drive. The update file you need can be downloaded from the link bellow. Please keep in mind that this is the latest update file and once installed
Archos 605 Update File Version 2.0.10
You can either downloaded to the unit itself or download the file to your desktop and then move it over to 605. Once it is moved click ok on the Archos and it will do the rest itself.
Archos 705
The instructions for the 705 are the same as the 605 except the update file is different. Click on the link bellow to download it.
